    Senegal have risen above adversity

The past four years have been a roller-coaster ride for Senegalese football. In the 2018 World Cup, they became the first team to be denied a place in the last 16 due to the fair-play rule.

They’ve also had to make do without Sadio Mane in this World Cup after the Bayern Munich man picked up an injury on the eve of the tournament.

They have still managed to reach the last 16 in Qatar.

Senegal went out of the World Cup group stage on 'fair play' four years ago. Were robbed of their star player Sadio Mane on the eve of the tournament. Hard not to feel pleased for them this time. A huge result for #SEN and African football.

Senegal ensure Africa have a team in the knockout stages

Senegal’s progression into the last 16 of the World Cup means that Africa will have at least one team in the knockout stages of the competition.

Their win over Ecuador also marks the first time they have won two straight games in the World Cup.

The Champions of Africa are through

Cisse led Senegal to the African Cup of Nations (AFCON) title in Cameroon earlier this year and now, he has led the team to the last 16 of the World Cup.

The Lions of Teranga will be looking to emulate, if not better, their 2002 run to the quarter-finals.

    Senegal comfortable

Ecuador dominated possession but they never really settled on the ball and struggled to break down the Senegal defence. Star man Enner Valencia, who played the full 90 minutes despite carrying a knee injury, was on the periphery for much of the match.

The Lions of Teranga came out roaring for today’s must-win match. They have shown they can score goals without  their star player Sadio Mane, who has missed the World Cup due to injury.

Now, they can sit back and watch the late games from Group B to find out who they will face in the next round.

Dia does well to get past Estupinan. He hits his shot too powerfully, and it is wide. Had he scored, it would have surely ended Ecuador’s chances of advancing to the last 16.

Senegal going through as things stand

Should the score remain as is, Senegal will advance to the last 16 while Ecuador will head home.

If Ecuador can find an equaliser then they will progress to the knockout stages. The South Americans have less than 15 minutes to find a goal.

Captain Kalidou Koulibaly’s goal has restored Senegal to second place in Group A, just moments after Ecuador had leapfrogged the African champions.

As it stands, the Lions of Teranga will be going through to the last 16 along with the Netherlands.

But with more than 15 minutes of normal time still to play, plus whatever stoppage time is added on, the South American side will be pressing hard for an equaliser that would turn the tables once more.

There were less than three minutes between the two goals. Senegal are now back in second place in Group A.
