Nurse at northern Gaza hospital appeals for help amid Israeli attacks
Noha Ahmed, a nurse at Kamal Adwan Hospital in Jabalia in northern Gaza, has sent out an appeal for help for her hospital, which is facing overcrowding and shortfalls of supplies amid intense Israeli attacks on the north of the Strip.
“We are facing heavy bombing in Jabalia camp, and we look forward to urgent and real support for our hospital to ensure we have the necessary medical equipment to save the wounded and injured,” she said in the video message verified by Al Jazeera’s fact-checking unit.

Injuries in Gaza’s Jabalia in Israeli attack
The Gaza Strip’s Civil Defence says in a statement that at least three people have been wounded when the Israeli army targeted a residential tower in al-Alami area of the city in the north of the territory.
The Israeli army has placed Jabalia refugee camp under a state of siege for days, ordering residents to evacuate.
Earlier, we reported on a group of those evacuees, displaced from their homes and heading towards Gaza City to seek shelter, who came under heavy gunfire from Israeli forces. That attack wounded several of the party, including a girl.

LISTEN: Has the Zionist model failed?
Is Israel still attractive to Jewish people around the world?
Hundreds of thousands have left Israel since it launched its war on Gaza last year.
With the violence and hostility worsening, is Israel a place where Jewish people can find safety and security? Or has the Zionist model failed?

Another Palestinian wounded in Israeli raid in occupied West Bank
A young Palestinian has been wounded during an Israeli army raid on the town of Yabad in the Jenin governorate of the occupied West Bank.
The Wafa news agency reported that Israeli forces attacked residents with live ammunition and stun grenades, shooting and injuring a young man in the hand.
Earlier today, another two young Palestinian men were wounded, one seriously, by Israeli live fire during confrontations that broke out in the Arroub refugee camp north of Hebron.
In Qalqilya, another young man was shot and injured by Israeli forces.

US sent record amount of military aid to Israel after October 7
The US has supplied Israel with at least $17.9bn in military aid since its war on Gaza began on October 7 last year, according to a report for Brown University’s Costs of War project.
The report, released on the anniversary of the Hamas-led attacks on southern Israel, says expenditure includes $4bn towards replenishing Israel’s Iron Dome and David’s Sling missile defence systems, as well as cash for guns and jet fuel.
The report states that an additional $4.86bn in funding was supplied to US military operations in the Middle East during that timeframe.
This figure includes the costs associated with the US military’s campaign to quell Houthi attacks in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden, which the Yemen-based group says it’s carrying out in solidarity with the people of Gaza.
The calculations were made by Linda J Bilmes, a professor at Harvard’s John F Kennedy School of Government, who assessed the cost of US wars since the September 11 attacks, along with researchers William D Hartung and Stephen Semler.

For Palestinians in Gaza today, nothing worse than collecting pieces of slain loved ones
One of the hardest things we keep hearing from people in Gaza is they have to prove they are human and they deserve protection and safety, and to be shielded from the unpredictable falling of bombs.
Let’s not forget the Israeli military and its political leadership have promised to deliver death and destruction to Palestinians in the Gaza Strip, and now, after a whole year, we are witnessing the Israeli military and its political officials have indeed delivered what they promised.
Life as people knew it before October 7 no longer exists, and their priorities have shifted. Now, their main concern is staying safe and, more importantly, staying intact.
The worst thing that could happen to a Palestinian in Gaza currently is being killed and their family members having to collect pieces of their bodies off the ground.

Large pro-Palestine protests expected in New York
Thousands of demonstrators have taken to the streets of New York today. They’ve been showing up at different parks and locations around the city.
We’re seeing student groups, labour unions, Orthodox Jewish groups and Jewish Voices for Peace, a very young group that has been organising around the cause of Palestinians.
There is a huge police presence behind me as demonstrators are expected to arrive in the coming minutes.
They’ve been marching around the city. We know that in at least 10 universities today, student groups called for walkouts from their classes, and those university students gathered at one park to make their voices heard to call for an end to the genocide in Gaza and the ongoing hostilities in Lebanon.
This movement has been taking place since last year but only seems to be getting bigger, and it certainly has attracted a lot of attention on this momentous day.

Former Israeli security chief: No complete victory possible in Gaza, Lebanon
The former head of Israel’s National Security Council, Giora Eiland, says Israel will not be able to achieve “complete victory” in Gaza or Lebanon.
In an interview with the Israeli Channel 12, Eiland reiterated Hamas and Hezbollah “will not surrender and there will always be those who continue to fire”. He added that continuing the war on two fronts won’t serve Israel’s interest and it would be “wise” to open the door to political settlements.
“It is unfortunate to continue believing that military pressure in Gaza and Lebanon alone can achieve salvation,” Eiland said.
Qassam Brigades, Hamas’s armed wing, earlier launched a barrage of missiles from southern Gaza towards Tel Aviv on the anniversary of the deadly October 7 attack.

No letup in Israeli bombardment of southern Lebanon
These air strikes on Beirut have been taking place on a nightly basis, especially since the escalation has heated up in the last couple of weeks.
We have seen a few in the past couple of hours hitting Dahiyeh and those southern suburbs of Beirut. We know that there’s an airport just adjacent and there’s one airline still operating: Middle East Airlines.
We’re seeing these flights going through these plumes of smoke. It is also very scary for people living there. On Sunday evening, we saw some of the heaviest bombardment in this area. Late into the evening, there was a massive explosion.
The suburbs have predominantly emptied of people but there will still be a few there. Paramedics cannot get in to see if there are any injuries or fatalities.

Hezbollah says it fired missiles at military target near Tel Aviv
Hezbollah says it targeted an Israeli military intelligence unit located in the suburbs of Tel Aviv with missiles.
The Israeli military said that about five missiles were detected as crossing from Lebanon, with some of them intercepted and the rest falling in an open area.

‘The world has forgotten’ about the captives
Udi Goren, who lost his cousin in the October 7 attack, told Al Jazeera that it feels like “the world has forgotten” there is a “critical and timely matter” of securing the release of the captives.
Goren said the “war could end tomorrow” and stop the suffering of Israelis and Palestinians if the Israeli government and other nations focused on this objective.
“We keep hearing from the world, ‘Let’s end the war’, ‘Let’s have a ceasefire’, he said, adding that countries keep arming Israel and sending humanitarian aid to Gaza, simply adding “fuel to the fires”.
“I want to see the end of Gazan’s suffering. We don’t enjoy seeing 2 million people internally displaced, some of them being refugees for the second time in their lives,” Goren said. “I want to see everyone calling out for the release of the hostages and that would be the day when the war would end.”

Columbia University protesters mark one year since Israel’s war on Gaza began
Pro-Palestine demonstrators have marched on campus at Columbia University in New York City, chanting “Free, free Palestine” on the one-year anniversary of Israel’s war on Gaza.
Just outside the US university’s campus, pro-Israel protesters also gathered, holding placards with captives’ faces and names and saying “Bring them home now”.
Israel’s war on Gaza, which has claimed the lives of close to 42,000 Palestinians, has unleashed the biggest outpouring of US student activism since the anti-racism protests of 2020.
Protests against the Gaza war began on Columbia’s campus in April, inspiring similar encampments at other institutions across the United States and beyond.
Minouche Shafik, the then-president of Columbia University, resigned after she allowed New York City police onto the campus to clear the protests, triggering outrage from protesters and some academics and calls for her ouster.
Now, as those student protesters return for a new year of learning, they are facing a landscape transformed by updated restrictions, heightened security measures and increased scrutiny of pro-Palestine movements.

Why Palestinians won’t leave their land
The question of why Palestinians refuse to leave their homes and ancestral lands, even in the face of relentless bombardment, raids, settler encroachment and economic dispossession, is one that is deeply personal and fundamental to Palestinian identity.
It is not simply a matter of geography or property ownership but a profound connection to the land that is woven into the fabric of Palestinian history, culture and collective memory.
There is a stubbornness to this decision but also a deep understanding that to leave would be to sever a connection that has been in place for generations.

Israeli forces shoot three Palestinians in occupied West Bank
Two young Palestinian men have been wounded, one seriously, by Israeli live fire during confrontations that broke out in the al-Arroub refugee camp north of Hebron, Wafa reports.
During a raid into the camp, Israeli forces fired live ammunition, stun grenades and tear gas at residents, shooting and wounding two men, one of whom was critically injured in the back.
Dozens of others were treated at the scene for tear gas exposure.
In Qalqiliya, another young man was shot and injured by Israeli forces.
Wafa reported that the man was shot in the back during a military raid into the city. He was taken to hospital where his condition was described as stable.

US says it does not want to see UN peacekeepers in Lebanon put in danger
The US does not want UN peacekeepers in Lebanon to be put in danger in any way, including being attacked by Israel, the State Department says, adding that the mission plays an important role in establishing security in the country.
State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller also said the US made clear to Israel that it wants to see roads to Beirut’s airport continue to be operated.
“We don’t want to see UNIFIL forces put in danger in any way. UNIFIL forces play an important role in establishing security in Lebanon,” Miller told reporters.
The mission is mandated by the UN Security Council to help the Lebanese army keep the area free of weapons and armed personnel other than those of the state.
The Israeli military asked UN peacekeepers last week to prepare to relocate more than 5km (3 miles) from the border between Israel and Lebanon “as soon as possible in order to maintain your safety”.
