UN to probe sexual misconduct allegations against ICC’s top prosecutor: Report
A UN watchdog has been selected to lead an external probe into allegations of sexual misconduct against the top prosecutor of the International Criminal Court, The Associated Press reports.
The move will likely generate conflict of interest concerns owing to the prosecutor’s wife’s past work for the oversight body.
Chief prosecutor Karim Khan provided updates on the court’s politically sensitive investigations into war crimes and atrocities in Ukraine, Gaza and Venezuela, among other conflict areas, during the institution’s annual meeting this week in The Hague, Netherlands.
Late last month, the ICC issued arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, his former defence minister and a Hamas military commander for alleged war crimes, which Khan had requested earlier this year.

More than 11,900 Palestinians detained by Israel since Gaza war, rights group says
The Palestinian Prisoner’s Society says the figure includes Palestinians from the occupied West Bank and East Jerusalem, adding that some have since been released.
According to the group, this includes 790 children and 136 journalists. The group also said that at least 47 Palestinians have died in Israeli custody.
Palestinians held in Israeli detention facilities are facing extremely harsh circumstances as they endure beatings, torture, medical negligence and more, according to prisoner rights groups.

Survivor of Israeli attack on Gaza school recounts story
A UNRWA school in Gaza’s Zeitoun neighbourhood, which is housing hundreds of displaced families, was hit by an Israeli air strike, which destroyed the ground floor.
Four people were killed and multiple others were wounded.
Hanan Abu Asi survived the attack and spoke to Al Jazeera about the terrifying experience.
Here is what she said:
“We have been displaced for a long time and took shelter in this school.
“As I was trying to make some food for my children, all of a sudden, doors and windows started flying over our heads. We could not hear the explosion caused by the missile, but we felt very high pressure.
“I ran for my children to find one of them injured in his head. He was bleeding heavily; his blood is all over me. My husband rushed him to the hospital. I came out to see this massive destruction.
“The [Israeli army] continues to bomb innocent civilians, women and children. What wrong did we do? Our homes were destroyed and took shelter in schools and tents. Only God is our shield; He is our rock.”

WATCH: Lebanese rebuild and resume daily activities after war
Lebanon has accused Israel of repeatedly violating the ceasefire since it went into effect a week ago. The south of the country has seen the largest amount of violence.
Even in the capital Beirut, residents report hearing Israeli attack drones hovering overhead at night.
Having just begun to assess the damage done by more than a year of war with Israel, Lebanese people are now having to rebuild under fire.
Al Jazeera’s Zein Basravi reports from Beirut, Lebanon:

Many wounded in Gaza have ‘life-changing injuries’, UN bodies say
At least a quarter of those injured in Gaza have “life-changing injuries”, the UN agency for Palestinian refugees (UNRWA) says.
It cited the World Health Organization as saying that thousands have lost a limb in the past 14 months, since Israel launched its deadly offensive in the Strip, as a result of bombing and shelling.
“Together with partners, UNRWA supports people with disabilities by providing assistive devices, mental health and psychosocial services, and rehabilitation,” the agency said in a post on X.

WATCH: Can efforts to revive negotiations to halt Israel’s attacks in Gaza make progress?
It has been a tense week in the Middle East since a fragile ceasefire was put in place in Lebanon.
The US president’s announcement soon after that he would be turning his attention to Gaza bolstered hopes of a truce in the Strip.
Behind the scenes, efforts are reportedly under way to get back to the table to try to stop the Israeli violence and facilitate the release of captives. But on the ground, Israeli bombardments have been relentless.
The UN says the delivery of food and aid in Gaza is at an all-time low.
Will the violence derail US plans? And what is likely to happen once US President-elect Donald Trump takes over in less than two months?

Qatar rejects any attempt to reduce UNRWA’s role
The words came in a statement from Abdulaziz Mohammed Al Mansoori, a Qatari official in Geneva, during the annual pledging conference of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) in Geneva.
“The State of Qatar expressed its rejection of any attempts to either terminate or reduce the role of UNRWA, strip Palestinians of their refugee status, or liquidate their cause”, the QNA news agency reports.
Just days ago, the UN’s agency for Palestinian refugees halted the delivery of aid through the Karem Abu Salem (known as Kerem Shalom to Israelis) crossing between Israel and Gaza because of security concerns.
Israeli lawmakers are also moving to ban the organisation from operating within the country, a move that has drawn widespread international criticism.

Palestinian shot, then arrested in occupied East Jerusalem
Israeli forces fired live bullets, wounding a man and then arresting him in the Silwan neighbourhood, south of the Old City of Jerusalem, the Wafa news agency reports.
The detention came as Israeli forces stormed Hizma, a town northeast of the city, Wafa said, citing local sources.
The detention of Palestinians across the West Bank and Jerusalem has intensified in scale and frequency since October last year. More than 10,000 are currently held in Israeli detention, many without charge or trial, according to Addameer, a prisoners’ rights organisation.

WATCH: Israel, Hezbollah ‘have to compromise’ on truce implementation, negotiator says
Yossi Beilin, a former Israeli minister and peace negotiator, says there seem to be different interpretations of the Israeli-Hezbollah agreement.
He told Al Jazeera from Tel Aviv that it is a positive fact that there is “a third party” in the agreement, which can warn the sides about breaches of the deal.
However, there are some problems with the agreement, he said, adding that both sides compromised while making the deal and now they will have to compromise once again on its implementation.

US ‘outraged’ at Israel’s killing of Gaza aid workers
The US urges Israel to investigate allegations that its air strikes have killed aid workers in Gaza, State Department spokesperson Vedant Patel says, expressing outrage over the recent killing of a Save the Children staffer.
This week, Israeli strikes killed staff of the NGOs Save the Children and World Central Kitchen.
Asked about the killing of 39-year-old Ahmad Faisal Isleem Al-Qadi in an air strike on Saturday in Khan Younis, Patel said Washington was seeking more information about the death.
“We are outraged, and we are wanting more information about this incident,” Patel said.
“The [Israeli army] needs to provide additional information about this incident,” he added.
US officials have had similar words for past Israeli killings of aid workers and attacks on UN personnel and have also urged Israel to investigate or provide more information.
Public follow-up is rarely done, and consequences for Israel are scarcely offered.

Medical workers call for evacuation of Gaza’s wounded and ill
A group of doctors and medical professionals have called for the evacuation of some 25,000 wounded and ill Palestinians from the besieged Gaza Strip, saying they should be brought to occupied East Jerusalem for treatment.
In a news conference held in East Jerusalem’s Augusta Victoria Hospital, doctors said the 25,000 people require “life-saving procedures”.
They called for the opening of “safe medical evacuation corridors” and for the right of those who receive treatment to be able to freely return to their homes in Gaza.
“We cannot let these children die simply because they cannot access the care they desperately need,” Khadrah Salama, a paediatric oncologist, was quoted as saying by the Palestinian news agency Wafa.

Israeli army arrests two Palestinians near Nablus
The two have been identified as Ahmed Shatara and Mohammed al-Baz, who were taken from their homes in Qalqilya in the north of the occupied West Bank.
The Palestinian news agency Wafa, quoting local sources, said the pair were detained when Israeli forces raided their homes in the town.
Israeli forces have stepped up a large-scale arrest campaign across the West Bank since the start of the Gaza war in October last year. More than 10,000 Palestinians are held in Israeli jails, many of them under administrative detention – a widely criticised practice that involves being held without charge or trial for renewable six-month periods.
According to a prisoner rights groups, Palestinians in Israeli detention are facing harsh treatment, including beatings, torture and medical negligence.
