What ICJ, ICC cases have been opened against Israel?

After the recent statements by human rights experts regarding the ICJ case on Israel’s occupation of Palestinian territory, here is a reminder of some of the other cases and rulings against Israel.

In a case brought by South Africa, the Hague-based UN court is considering allegations that Israel is committing genocide in its war on Gaza.

A preliminary ruling has already been made, with the court ordering Israel to prevent and punish incitement to genocide and to increase provisions of humanitarian aid.

In May, the ICJ also ordered Israel to halt its offensive on Rafah, citing “immense risk” to hundreds of thousands of Palestinians taking shelter there. But Israel has continued its attacks on Gaza, including Rafah, in defiance of the UN court.

The International Criminal Court (ICC), also based in the Hague, but not part of the UN, has also applied for arrest warrants for Benjamin Netanyahu and his Defense Minister Yoav Gallant.

Solid waste management system in Gaza has collapsed: UN

The United Nations Development Programme has concluded the waste management system in Gaza is no longer functioning.

In its latest report, it said there is no access to major landfills and waste is accumulating “at more than 140 temporary dumping sites which causes serious health and environmental risks, including a spike in diarrheal illness and in acute respiratory infections”.

Since October 7, it noted there have been the following recorded cases, noting the statistics are “likely far higher”:

    • Nearly 1 million cases of acute respiratory infections
    • 575,000 cases of acute watery diarrhoea
    • More than 100,000 cases of jaundice

The agency called for an urgent response because of increasing public health risks.Interactive_StayingWarm_Gaza_Disease and hygiene criss

In nine days, Israeli army killed 255 people in Khan Younis: Gaza officials

A statement on Telegram says 255 people have been killed, about 300 people wounded with 31 missing in the nine-day “horrific massacre” carried out on the eastern outskirts of Gaza’s second-largest city.

Thirty-one homes were bombed by the Israeli military while their residents were inside, the office said, adding 320 homes and residential buildings were struck in total. The army obstructed operations to reach dozens of wounded during the attack, it said.

“We condemn in the strongest terms the Israeli occupation’s horrific massacre against civilians and displaced persons in the east of the Khan Younis governorate,” the office said.

It called on the international community to push Israel to stop “the crime of genocide” in Gaza.

Human rights experts say Israel, UN member states ‘must comply’ with ICJ ruling

A panel of independent human rights experts say that “Israel must stop acting as if uniquely above the law” and must “immediately comply with the authoritative determination by the ICJ on Israel’s presence in the occupied Palestinian territory”.

Earlier this month, the ICJ ruled that Israel’s continued presence in the occupied Palestinian territory is unlawful and should come to an end “as rapidly as possible”.

“The advisory opinion reaffirms peremptory norms prohibiting annexation, settlements, racial segregation and apartheid, and should be seen as declaratory in nature and binding on Israel and all States supporting the occupation,” a press release from the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights quoted the experts as saying.

“The Court has finally reaffirmed a principle that seemed unclear, even to the United Nations: Freedom from foreign military occupation, racial segregation, and apartheid is absolutely non-negotiable,” the experts said.

International Court of Justice (ICJ) holds a hearing to allow parties to give their views on the legal consequences of Israel's occupation of the Palestinian territories before eventually issuing a non-binding legal opinion in The Hague, Netherlands, February 19, 2024

Two Palestinians killed by Israeli forces in occupied West Bank

Two Palestinians who were shot by Israeli forces in the occupied West Bank earlier today have died, Wafa news agency reports.

The report, citing security and medical sources, said Ramadan Hussein Mohammad Sadeq, 45, died of injuries in Nablus after he was shot in the head, chest and back in front of his house.

Elsewhere, a Palestinian minor died after being shot by Israeli forces near the Beit Einun village junction, north of Hebron, according to security sources.

Mohammad Murad Mohammad Jaradat, 14, was shot at close range, the Wafa report said, adding that the soldiers left Jaradat bleeding on the ground and prevented medics from reaching him.

Attacks, discrimination against US Muslims, Palestinians jumps 70% in first half of 2024: CAIR

Attacks and cases of discrimination against Muslims and Palestinians in the United States rose by about 70 percent from January to June, according to the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR).

CAIR said it received 4,951 complaints of anti-Muslim and anti-Palestinian incidents, which is a steep rise compared with the same period last year, Reuters reports. CAIR documented 8,061 complaints in the whole of 2023.

Most of the complaints were in the categories of immigration and asylum, employment discrimination, education discrimination and hate crimes, the advocacy group said.

Serious incidents against Muslims and Palestinians in the US in the nine months since Israel’s war on Gaza began include the fatal stabbing of a six-year-old Palestinian-American child in Illinois in October. The stabbing in February of a Palestinian-American man in Texas. The shooting of three students of Palestinian descent in Vermont in November, and the attempted drowning of a three-year-old Palestinian-American girl in May.

Could Palestine decide the US presidential election?

It has been a dramatic half a month for US politics with a dizzying string of rapid-fire events.

Donald Trump survived an assassination attempt and emerged bolder and more energised in rallying his base.

Joe Biden withdrew from the presidential race, endorsing Kamala Harris, who, within a week, managed to win enough delegate support to secure the nomination at the upcoming Democratic National Convention set for August 19 to 22.

Harris has re-invigorated the Democratic campaign, raising more than $200m in donations, registering 100,000 new voters, and securing 170,000 new volunteers within just seven days.

She is also doing better at the polls. Her “favourability” score with the American public rose 8 percentage points to 43 percent in one week. Among likely voters, she is currently polling at 47 percent, just one percentage point behind Trump.

Clashes in Tel Aviv amid protests over conscription of ultra-Orthodox Jews

Clashes between police and ultra-Orthodox protesters in Tel Aviv have erupted as demonstrations over the conscription of their community into the military continue.

Hundreds of ultra-Orthodox Jews – or Haredi – had gathered outside an army event, Yedioth Ahronoth newspaper reported.

“You will be killed and won’t pass,” chanted protesters as they tried to block the entrance to the building and prevent attendees from crossing.

Police called additional reinforcements and erected additional barriers to prevent protesters from storming the site.

Last month, Israel’s Supreme Court mandated the drafting of Haredi Jews into the army and banned financial aid to religious institutions whose students refuse military service.

Haredi Jews make up about 13 percent of Israel’s population of approximately 9.9 million and do not serve in the military, dedicating their lives to studying the Torah.

Israeli law requires all Israelis over 18 to serve in the military, and the exemption of Haredi has been a contentious issue for decades.

Polio epidemic declared in Gaza in latest sign of worsening health crisis

Gaza’s Health Ministry has declared a polio epidemic across the Palestinian enclave, blaming Israel’s devastating military offensive for the spread of the deadly virus.

In a statement on Telegram, the ministry said the situation “poses a health threat to the residents of Gaza and neighbouring countries”, in the latest sign of a worsening public health emergency caused by Israel’s war since October.

Calling the epidemic a “setback” to the global polio eradication programme, the ministry called for an “immediate intervention to end the [Israeli] aggression and find radical solutions”.

Are Palestinians being tortured in Israeli prisons?

Israel has detained nine soldiers working at the Sde Teiman detention camp in the Naqab (Negev) desert, accused of abusing Palestinians held there.

The base – which has been compared to Guantanamo – has been used as a facility to house Palestinians rounded up in Gaza and held without charge. Many are now pointing to the detention of the soldiers as evidence of the continued abuse of prisoners.

Palestinians returning to Khan Younis: ‘We had nowhere to go’

Thousands of Palestinians have returned to their homes in the ruins of Khan Younis after Israeli forces ended a week-long incursion there.

After the Israeli forces left, people streamed back to their homes on foot and with donkey carts carrying their belongings. Many found their houses damaged or destroyed.

“I am coming back and I have faith in God. I don’t know whether we will live or die, but it is all for the sake of the homeland,” Etimad al-Masi, a displaced Palestinian, told Al Jazeera.

Palestinian health officials said rescue workers had so far recovered dozens of bodies after the Israeli incursion.

Yamen Abu Suleiman, from the Gaza Civil Defence, said: “The symptoms of decomposition began to appear on the bodies. We found dismembered bodies due to quadcopter direct targeting.”

Other Palestinians said that they returned despite the destruction because they had no other choice.

“What made us return to our home is that we had no refuge or shelter, nowhere to go, no water, even toilets. This is what encouraged us to return to our homes. And by the grace of God, we hope for what is good,” Walid Abu Nsaira, a displaced Palestinian, told Al Jazeera.

Heavy traffic and panic in southern Beirut

    By Reporting from Beirut, Lebanon

I’m in the southern suburbs of Beirut and the explosion took place around 30 minutes ago.

It was clear that a drone attacked an apartment in an area where Hezbollah functions widely.

It’s very heavy traffic right now. Everyone is trying to rush to their houses. Ambulances are rushing to the scene of the attack.

Everybody heard the explosion here, and it’s causing a lot of panic.

This is not a war, for the moment, but it could be the beginning of a series of attacks, Israel is saying, in retaliation to the attack on Majdal Shams.

What’s going to happen next is the big question. Has the Israeli threat to attack Hezbollah ended here? Or is this just the beginning?
