  • Hamas says it has submitted its response to Gaza mediators, agreeing to free all Israeli captives under US President Donald Trump’s peace plan and handing over administration of the enclave to Palestinian technocrats.
  • At least 72 Palestinians have been killed in Israeli attacks across the Gaza Strip since dawn, including 42 in Gaza City alone, according to medical sources speaking to Al Jazeera.
  • Israel’s army is using remote-controlled vehicles packed with explosives to demolish entire neighbourhoods in besieged Gaza City after issuing a “last chance” to leave warning to hundreds of thousands of trapped Palestinians.
  • Israel’s war on Gaza has killed at least 66,288 people and wounded 169,165 since October 2023. Thousands more are believed to be buried under the rubble. A total of 1,139 people were killed in Israel during the October 7, 2023, attacks and about 200 were taken captive.

    Here’s what happened today

We’ll be closing this live page soon. Here’s a recap of the day’s biggest events:

    • Hamas has accepted core elements of US President Donald Trump’s plan for Gaza, including the return of all Israeli captives, but analysts say the details need to be hammered out in negotiations.
    • Trump has welcomed Hamas’s statement and called for Israel to stop bombing Gaza, while negotiators Qatar and Egypt say they are committed to putting the peace plan in place.
    • Israeli attacks continue to pummel Gaza City, killing at least 42 people in the city since dawn, including three children in the Sabra neighbourhood. A total of 72 people have been killed across the Gaza Strip today.
    • Israeli settlers have stormed a Bedouin community in the occupied West Bank, adding to an ongoing uptick in Israeli settler violence in the two years since Israel started its war on Gaza.
    • Hundreds of Global Sumud Flotilla members are still detained in Israel, with some reportedly transferred to Ktzi’ot Prison in Israel’s southern Negev region and several deported from the country.

‘Real, tangible’ pressure from US needed for Israeli withdrawal

The main challenge for the international community in implementing a Gaza peace plan will be “ambiguity” on Israel’s part, not Hamas’s, an analyst has told Al Jazeera.

“Hamas is almost not an actor anymore. Gaza is demolished, they’ve killed all of the military leaders, they’ve killed all of the negotiators,” Natasha Hall, a senior associate at the Center for Strategic and International Studies in Washington, DC, told Al Jazeera.

“The issue for the United States and the international community is how much patience [they are] going to have for dealing with the other points of this plan, which are actually really essential for ending the war,” Hall continued.

Presuming Hamas fulfils its commitment to returning all remaining captives, “Netanyahu has lost all his opposition within Israel and can continue the war”, a promise he has made in both English and Hebrew to far-right audiences, Hall said.

Such promises, she added, make it difficult to surmise whether the plan is feasible without “real, tangible” US pressure for an Israeli withdrawal.

French president says Hamas response must be ‘followed up without delay’

Emmanuel Macron says the release of Israeli captives and a Gaza ceasefire “are within reach”.

“We now have the opportunity to make decisive progress towards peace,” the French president wrote in a social media post, thanking Trump for his efforts.

“France will play its full part in line with its efforts at the United Nations, alongside the United States, Israelis and Palestinians, and all of its international partners,” Macron said.

Progress being made on Gaza deal but details need to be ironed out

That’s according to Yossi Mekelberg, a senior fellow with the Middle East and North Africa programme at Chatham House.

Mekelberg told Al Jazeera that what Trump’s Gaza plan has always been missing are details.

“So now we’re getting to the stage that both sides will have to discuss the details,” he said.

“If President Trump can put the pressure on both of them, together with the other mediators, then they can make some progress.”

Antonio Guterres has welcomed Hamas’s response to the Trump plan for Gaza, his spokesperson says, while thanking Qatar and Egypt for their mediation.

In a statement, Stephane Dujarric said Guterres also reiterated his call “for an immediate and permanent ceasefire, the immediate and unconditional release of all hostages, and unfettered humanitarian access”.

“The United Nations will support all efforts toward these objectives to prevent even more suffering,” Dujarric said.

Members of Trump’s team have ‘had it with Netanyahu’s antics’

William Lawrence, a Middle East analyst and professor at American University, says Trump has people around him that want his Gaza plan to go through “against the wishes of Israel” and the pro-Israel lobby in the US.

“People have figured out that it’s not about finishing the job [for Israel], it’s about perpetual war, perpetual occupation,” Lawrence explained.

“There is a sense now that there’s a certain thinking for Trump and a certain number of advisers around Trump who have kind of had it with Netanyahu’s antics,” he said.

“So if this thing turns for the better now, it’ll be because Hamas is calling everyone’s bluff and Trump is also calling Netanyahu’s bluff.”

As we’ve been reporting, experts have long said that Netanyahu has sabotaged efforts to reach a lasting ceasefire in Gaza for political reasons.

US judge dismisses lawsuit accusing UN agency of aiding Hamas attack on Israel

A US judge dismissed a lawsuit by dozens of Israelis who accused the United Nations agency for Palestinian refugees of funnelling more than $1bn that aided Hamas’s October 7, 2023 attack on Israel.

US District Judge Analisa Torres in Manhattan said the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) had “absolute immunity” from the lawsuit because it is a subsidiary of the United Nations, which has immunity from such lawsuits.

Torres also rejected an argument that UNRWA was merely a “specialized agency” not entitled to immunity.

She cited UN lawyers who said subsidiaries such as UNRWA that have considerable autonomy are not “completely independent” because their parent entities can change their structures or close them.

Gavriel Mairone, a lawyer for the plaintiffs, said on Friday his clients plan to appeal.

Egypt to exert ‘maximum effort’ to achieve lasting ceasefire

Egypt’s Foreign Ministry has welcomed Hamas’s acceptance of key tenets of Trump’s plan and says it recognises the “necessity of ending this war” to establish a Palestinian state.

“Egypt expresses its hope that this positive development will lead all parties to rise to the level of responsibility by committing to implementing President Trump’s plan on the ground, ending the war, allowing unrestricted UN access”, and releasing the captives, the ministry said.

The ministry also reiterated its appreciation of Trump’s “wise leadership” and said it was committed to exerting “maximum effort … to achieve a permanent ceasefire, alleviate the suffering of the Palestinian people, and rebuild the Gaza Strip”.

Prospect of ending Gaza war ‘depends on how committed Trump is’

    By Shihab Rattansi

    Reporting from Washington, DC

We know that Trump has recorded a message to be played out, and given everything we’ve heard from him so far, we expect this to be Trump using the full visual power of the White House to be the international peacemaker he feels he is – and doesn’t often get credit for.

The key point here is the release of the captives. A lot of the other issues are certainly important to him, but in the end, for Trump, it’s always been, “I promised the relatives of the captives I would bring them home”.

You can imagine the forces gathering here in Washington, DC, right now, attempting to change Donald Trump’s mind.

All of this now depends on how committed he is and how much pressure the mediators … are putting on him to keep to the terms of this agreement and not, as in the past, allow Hamas to live up to the agreement and allow Israel to resume the war again.

The spokesman for Qatar’s Foreign Ministry says the Gulf country has welcomed Hamas’s response to Trump’s Gaza plan, including the group’s readiness to release all Israeli captives.

    • Hamas has accepted several core provisions of US President Donald Trump’s 20-point plan for Gaza, including the return of all captives, living or dead.
    • Hamas is firm that the plan cannot be implemented without negotiation and says that returning the captives in 72 hours is unrealistic.
    • Trump has responded to Hamas’s statement on social media, writing that “Israel must immediately stop the bombing of Gaza, so that we can get the Hostages out safely and quickly!”

UK Green Party leader rails against ‘mass slaughter’ in Gaza

The new Green Party leader for England and Wales has called for the end of “mass slaughter” in Gaza as he railed against the current Labour Party’s approach to the conflict.

During a speech at the party’s conference, party leader Zack Polanski spoke fondly of his upbringing in a Jewish family from Manchester before shifting to Gaza in a passionate address that brought the audience to their feet.

“When mass slaughter is happening in Palestine, we will not be silent,” Polanski said.

“And when [British Prime Minister] Keir Starmer, in one of the most deeply cynical and morbid acts I’ve seen in my lifetime, decides to recognise a Palestinian state at the same moment that his government is an active participant in the murdering of Palestinians – then we will never be silent.”

He also called on the Labour government to withdraw the ban of the pro-Palestine group Palestine Action.

“Let it be heard across our country, a call that is now echoing around the world,” Polanski said. “We must stop selling arms to Israel, we must stop sharing intelligence, we will do everything we can to stop the genocide.”

Deal could achieve all of Israel’s ‘goals and objectives’

    By Hamdah Salhut

    Reporting from Amman, Jordan

Netanyahu has said this deal achieved all of the goals and objectives that [the Israeli government] set out back in October 2023, when Netanyahu said the main objective was to defeat Hamas politically and militarily, to ensure that Gaza no longer poses a threat to Israel, and, of course, to release all their remaining captives in Gaza.

One of the biggest criticisms Netanyahu has gotten from family members of those hostages is that he’s actually been the main obstacle himself: that he’s prolonged the war for personal and political gain, and that his government has grown so wildly unpopular amongst the Israeli public that he’s afraid his government would collapse if members of the right-wing coalition did not agree to this deal.

But Netanyahu, and members of the Israeli opposition, have said this deal does achieve all its goals and objectives.

Trump says Hamas response means Israel must stop bombing Gaza to get captives out

“Based on the Statement just issued by Hamas, I believe they are ready for a lasting PEACE. Israel must immediately stop the bombing of Gaza, so that we can get the Hostages out safely and quickly!” the US president has written on his Truth Social account.

Hamas wants deep talks on major questions left by Trump’s plan

Trump’s plan for Gaza “lacked a clear political horizon” and will require deep negotiation before it becomes operational, a political analyst has told Al Jazeera.

Sultan Barakat, a public policy professor at Hamad Bin Khalifa University in Qatar, told Al Jazeera the 20 points are better likened to “principles” and have left major questions about the future of Gaza up for debate.

“For it to be made operational, they need to sit together and they need to talk together,” Barakat said, adding that such discussions must place Palestinians “right at the centre”.

Longer-term questions range from the end of the Israeli occupation to linking the West Bank and Gaza, Barakat said.

“These are legitimate demands – these are all what would actually lead to a peace plan,” he continued. “So in effect, what [Hamas has] done, is said, ‘Let’s now stop the killing, you take your hostages, and let’s talk about what can happen in the future.'”

Hamas’s Abu Marzouk rejects Trump-led ‘Board of Peace’

Mousa Abu Marzouk has rejected a tenet of Trump’s Gaza proposal that says the US president will head a transitional oversight body for Gaza – the “Board of Peace” – alongside other officials, including ex-UK Prime Minister Tony Blair.

Abu Marzouk told Al Jazeera that Palestinians will never accept any kind of outside body having control over them. “Palestinians should control themselves,” the Hamas official said.

Under Trump’s plan, the board would set a framework and handle the funding for Gaza’s redevelopment until the Palestinian Authority completes reforms and can take over.

“We will never accept anyone who is not Palestinian to control the Palestinians,” Abu Marzouk said, adding that Blair specifically is unwelcome.

“We can’t bring someone like Tony Blair to be governor in Gaza because this man, he destroyed Iraq,” he said, referring to the former British leader’s decision to join the US invasion of Iraq in 2003.
