Turkiye seeks safe passage for 200 civilians trapped in Gaza tunnels: Report

Turkiye is working to ensure the safe passage of some 200 civilians trapped in tunnels in Gaza, after having facilitated the return of a deceased Israeli soldier killed there more than a decade ago, an unnamed senior Turkish official has told Reuters.

Hamas earlier said that fighters holed up in the Israeli-held Rafah area will not surrender to Israel, and it urged mediators to find a solution to the crisis that threatens the month-old ceasefire.

Turkiye, the senior official said, “successfully facilitated the return of Hadar Goldin’s remains to Israel after 11 years” after “intensive efforts [reflecting] Hamas’ clear commitment to the ceasefire”.

“At the same time, we are working to ensure the safe passage of some 200 Gazan civilians currently trapped in the tunnels,” the official told Reuters.

Senior UNRWA official describes difficulties getting aid into Gaza

A senior UNRWA official has described the difficulties of getting humanitarian supplies into Gaza for the agency, with about 5,000 agency-owned trucks currently blocked from entering the territory.

John Whyte, UNRWA’s senior deputy director for Gaza operations, told Irish news outlet The Journal that Israel is requiring the UN agency to hand over supplies to other relief organisations and remove its branding before permitting entry.

Israel’s parliament banned UNRWA last year, with the law taking effect in January.

“They just won’t let anything that’s owned by UNRWA go in,” Whyte said. “So they’re requiring us to hand our supplies over to other agencies, who then bring them in. But we also have to take the UNRWA logo off everything, which causes us a lot of hassle.”

“All of this is trying to just undermine the humanitarian effort, which has been the case right throughout the war,” Whyte said.

Former Israeli prosecutor investigated for video leak attempts suicide, says police commissioner

The former Israeli military prosecutor, Yifat Tomer-Yerushalmi, who resigned and is being investigated for leaking a video appearing to show the abuse of a Palestinian detainee, attempted suicide this morning, Police Commissioner Chief Superintendent Danny Levi says.

Tomer-Yerushalmi leaked the video last year to Israel’s Channel 12, triggering a huge backlash against her after reports emerged that she was responsible.

Netanyahu described it as the most “severe public relations attack” on Israel.

Rights group warns new settler outpost in Anata, occupied West Bank

Israeli settlers have begun establishing a new outpost on Palestinian land in the town of Anata, east of occupied East Jerusalem, the Bedouin rights group Al-Baidar said.

The group said the settlers started installing temporary structures and laying foundations for makeshift homes. The organisation warned that the move could lead to the displacement of Bedouin communities northeast of Jerusalem and restrict Palestinian access to their lands and pastures, which they rely on for grazing and agriculture.

Since the start of the war in October 2023, the number of outposts established each year has sharply increased, according to settlement watchdog Peace Now. In 2025, at least 68 new outposts have been set up, compared with seven in 2022.

Who are the captives whose bodies remain in Gaza?

Since the US-brokered ceasefire in Gaza began on October 10, Hamas has returned the remains of 24 captives held for the past two years.

But the process of returning the bodies of the four remaining captives, as called for under the truce deal, is progressing slowly, with Hamas searching for those left in coordination with the Red Cross under the millions of tonnes of rubble left by Israel’s two-year assault.

    The four remaining captives are:

    • Meny Godard, 73
    • Ran Gvili, 24
    • Dror Or, 52
    • Sudthisak Rinthalak

Rinthalak was an agricultural worker from Thailand who had been employed at Kibbutz Be’eri. According to media reports, Rinthalak was divorced and had been working in Israel since 2017. A total of 31 workers from Thailand were taken on October 7, the largest group of foreigners to be held in captivity. Most of them were released in the first and second ceasefires. The Thai Foreign Ministry has said that, in addition to the captives, 46 Thais have been killed during the war.

Father of dead Israeli soldier returned from Gaza calls for all captives’ remains to be returned

The father of an Israeli officer killed in Gaza in 2014, whose remains were returned from the territory, said that true victory in the current war would only be achieved when all captives are brought home.

“What this war has proven is that when we fight for our soldiers, we succeed. Victory means bringing home the hostages and bringing home our soldiers to Israel,” Simcha Goldin, father of Hadar Goldin, said in a statement.

How many captives have been returned so far?

The release of Hadar Goldin’s body was part of the United Nations-backed ceasefire agreement between Hamas and Israel signed in October.

According to the deal, Hamas handed over 20 living captives in return for nearly 2,000 Palestinian convicts and wartime detainees held in Israel.

It also agreed to return 28 bodies of dead captives in exchange for 300 bodies of Palestinians, though not all have been identified, according to Gaza’s health authorities. Goldin is the 24th set of remains.

The Palestinian group has been returning the dead captives one or two at a time, saying it struggles to locate and recover remains due to a lack of heavy machinery to dig through the piles of rubble caused by two years of Israeli bombardments.

World Bank backs UN plan for Gaza transitional governance body

The World Bank has endorsed a US-drafted United Nations resolution to create a two-year transitional administration in Gaza, Reuters reports.

In correspondence sent Saturday, World Bank President Ajay Banga informed US Ambassador to the UN Mike Waltz that the proposed “Board of Peace” body would enable the bank’s involvement in rebuilding efforts.

“The proposal to establish an authority … by the UN Security Council with the authorizations set out in the resolution would provide the needed framework for engagement by the Bank,” Banga wrote.

The resolution would give the Board of Peace powers to coordinate rebuilding work and economic revival initiatives.

Cost projections have risen from $50bn in February to a revised $70bn estimate, per the World Bank, UN and European Union.

What we know about the 2014 capture of Hadar Goldin

As we reported earlier, Hamas has returned the remains of Israeli soldier Hadar Goldin, who was captured in Gaza more than a decade ago.

The soldier, then 23, was taken by Hamas fighters in southern Rafah on August 1, 2014, during Israel’s 50-day military offensive in the Gaza Strip, codenamed Operation Protective Edge.

Soon after a humanitarian ceasefire on August 1, Hamas fighters opened fire at Israeli soldiers near a tunnel in Rafah and took Goldin’s body, according to an account from the Israeli government, which does not specify whether the soldier was killed in the incident or not.

Goldin’s capture unleashed a massive bombardment on Rafah by the Israeli army, which Amnesty International described as “indiscriminate and disproportionate”. Between August 1 and 4, Israeli forces killed at least 135 civilians, including 75 children, according to a report by the rights group.

The attacks hit the southern city without warning as displaced Palestinians were returning home due to the agreed-upon truce.

Since that war, the Israeli army said it had made extensive intelligence efforts alongside operational activities on the ground to locate Goldin’s body, but with no success.

Hamas figure stresses group’s commitment to ceasefire success

A senior figure in Hamas, Ismail Radwan, has spoken to our colleagues at Al Jazeera Arabic.

Radwan stressed Hamas’s commitment to making sure the ceasefire agreement succeeds and said it wanted to resolve the issues of the captives as soon as possible to ensure the truce and move to the next phase.

Radwan also mentioned that the Rafah crossing, the main entry and exit point for Palestinians from Gaza, needs to be open and that the agreements on the amount of aid entering the territory haven’t been met, with less than a third of the agreed-upon trucks arriving daily.

Another sticking point has been a group of Hamas fighters believed to still be stuck on the Israeli side of the yellow line, thought to number 100-200 fighters. Radwan said Hamas was ready to withdraw them.

Israel receives remains of soldier killed in Gaza in 2014

    By Caolán Magee

Israel has received the body of a soldier held in Gaza for more than a decade after he was killed in an ambush by Hamas fighters in 2014 during the last major ground assault on the Palestinian enclave.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office said on Sunday the remains were handed over to Israeli forces in Gaza by the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) after Hamas transferred the body to the aid organisation.

Hadar Goldin was killed on August 1, 2014, two hours after a ceasefire took effect and ended that year’s war between Israel and Hamas. He was part of an Israeli unit tasked with locating and destroying Hamas tunnels.

Israeli army claims it has destroyed four tunnels in Gaza

The Israeli army has said that over the last month, it has destroyed four underground tunnels behind the yellow line where its troops have been operating, in accordance with the phased ceasefire agreement that the US brokered and that saw Israel’s withdrawal from parts of Gaza.

An army statement said the tunnels were destroyed in the eastern Khan Younis area, where Israel has been repeatedly shelling since the ceasefire and where it has been carrying out house demolitions.

Hundreds of tunnels are believed to run beneath Gaza, developed partially by Hamas for military purposes but also previously used to import goods into the besieged territory.

    • Israeli opposition leader Yair Lapid has called violence by Israeli settlers against Palestinians in the occupied West Bank over the last week a “disgrace”. His statement comes amid a spike in attacks against Palestinians, which hit a monthly record in October since records have been kept, according to the United Nations.
    • Prison watchdog groups say Israeli forces arrested 442 Palestinians, including 33 children, in October.
    • Lebanon’s state-run National News Agency says an Israeli drone has carried out an attack in southern Lebanon near the village of Houmin al-Fawqa, targeting a car with two guided missiles. No casualties have been reported so far.
    • The drone attack took place after a Lebanese citizen was killed in an earlier drone attack on a vehicle on the al-Sawanna–Khirbet Selm road in southern Lebanon, the Lebanese Ministry of Public Health has reported.
    • The UN special rapporteur on the right to education, Farida Shaheed, says more than 660,000 children are currently out of school in Gaza, and of its estimated 815 schools, 97 percent have been damaged or destroyed.
