IRIB broadcaster reportedly continues despite Israeli attack

    By Tohid Asadi

    Reporting from Tehran, Iran

The scene is dominated by three elements: the smoke drifting through the air, the lingering echo of several explosions, and, of course, the concern and anxiety among people rushing out of their houses.

We know, based on the latest reports, the complex related to IRIB was attacked – the Iranian state broadcaster.

We saw thick smoke in footage coming out of that complex. The head of IRIB said they have no update on casualties. We may expect casualties given the scope and the sound of the explosions.

The latest update is that the broadcast is ongoing. The former building of the Iranian parliament was also said to be targeted.

Markets on edge over Iran’s ‘scorched-earth’ tactic of escalation

With strikes and counter-strikes under way throughout the Middle East, and Trump saying the conflict could go on for weeks, at least, analysts are focused on a long list of imponderables.

The scrutiny comes as oil prices jumped over the weekend from $70 to nearly $80 a barrel, and shipping through the critical oil lanes in the Strait of Hormuz ground to a halt.

“The conflict with Iran is a wild card, though markets may quickly lose interest if the situation looks likely to devolve from a regional to an internal conflict,” Tim Duy, chief US economist at SGH Macro Advisors, wrote.

In a separate note, SGH president and CEO Sassan Ghahramani – a Tehran native whose father was an Iranian diplomat before the 1979 Islamic revolution – pointed to the uncertainty of the current moment with the possibility of an Iranian civil war.

The situation could deteriorate, because of the “scorched-earth tactic of escalation from Tehran to [other] civilian centres… to hit the global economy and pressure an end to the war”, Ghahramani said.

Israeli army confirms killing Palestinian Islamic Jihad ‘commander’ in Beirut

The Israeli military has confirmed it killed Adham Adnan al-Othman, whom it described as the Palestinian Islamic Jihad commander in Lebanon.

The announcement comes after the Quds Brigades, the armed wing of Palestinian Islamic Jihad, said al-Othman was killed last night.

In a statement, the Israeli army said he held the position of commander for several years and was responsible for planning attacks against Israel.

He recently continued working on behalf of the group inside Lebanon, including training operatives, recruiting members, and procuring weapons, it alleged.

Iran denounces US-chaired ‘kids in conflict’ UN meeting after deadly school attack

US First Lady Melania Trump has presided over a UN Security Council meeting focusing on children in conflict, days after dozens of children at a school in Iran were reportedly killed in US-Israel strikes.

Iranian state media said an air strike hit a girls’ school in southern Iran, killing at least 165 people and wounding dozens more on Saturday.

The Israeli military said it was not aware of strikes in the area. The US military said it is looking into the reports.

Shortly before Monday’s UN session began, Iran’s ambassador to the UN, Amir Saeid Iravani, said it is “deeply shameful and hypocritical” for the US to convene a meeting on protecting children during war while launching attacks on heavily populated Iranian cities.

“For the United States, ‘protecting children’ and ‘maintaining international peace and security’ clearly mean something very different from what the UN Charter provides,” Iravani told reporters.

Israeli army confirms strikes on Iranian state TV

The Israeli air force has begun another attack on Iranian targets under the guidance of Israeli intelligence, according to the military.

Fighter jets dropped dozens of munitions and destroyed what the Israeli military said was the Iranian government’s “communications centre”, apparently referring to Iranian TV.

The Iranian broadcaster announced earlier that its headquarters in Tehran was under attack.

The joint US-Israeli attacks have killed at least 555 people in Iran since the air strikes began on Saturday, according to the Red Crescent.

Here are some more remarks from Marco Rubio:

    • The United States will introduce action to mitigate rising energy prices due to a spike in the price of oil caused by the Iran conflict.
    • The US is not postured for ground forces in Iran at this moment, but President Donald Trump has those options.
    • The objective Washington has set can be achieved without ground troops.
    • The hardest hits are yet to come in strikes on Iran.

US tells citizens to immediately depart a dozen Middle East nations

The US State Department has called on nationals to immediately leave more than a dozen countries in the Middle East during ongoing US-Israeli strikes against Iran.

US citizens were urged to leave by commercial means from Bahrain, Egypt, Iran, Iraq, Israel, the occupied West Bank and Gaza, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Syria, the United Arab Emirates and Yemen, according to Mora Namdar, the State Department’s ‌assistant secretary for consular affairs.

The intensity of the attacks, the killing of Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, and the lack of any apparent exit plan have set the stage for a prolonged conflict with far-reaching consequences.

‘Iran would have had nuclear bomb three years ago’: Trump

The US president claimed – without any evidence to back his assertion – that had he not scrapped the Iran nuclear deal signed by his predecessor, Barack Obama, Tehran would have had a nuclear bomb by now.

“If I didn’t terminate Obama’s horrendous Iran Nuclear Deal (JCPOA), Iran would have had a Nuclear Weapon three years ago. That was the most dangerous transaction we have ever entered into, and had it been allowed to stand, the World would be an entirely different place right now. You can blame Barack Hussein Obama, and Sleepy Joe Biden,” he wrote on his Truth Social platform.

Most independent analysts and inspectors had concluded, at the time, that Iran had complied with the JCPOA and kept its uranium enrichment under limit – far below the levels needed to build nuclear weapons.

Rubio says US ‘would love’ for Iranians to topple their government

Speaking to reporters, the US secretary of state says the US would not “deliberately” target a school, after Iran said 168 people died in an alleged US-Israeli strike.

“The United States would not deliberately target a school. Our objectives are missiles, both the ability to manufacture them and the ability to launch them,” Rubio told reporters, while adding that the Pentagon was investigating the alleged incident.

He also voiced support for toppling Iran’s authorities, but said it was not the objective of the US-Israel war against Tehran.

“We hope that the Iranian people can overthrow this government and establish a new future for that country. We would love for that to be possible,” Rubio said.

“But the objective of this mission is the destruction of their ballistic missile capabilities and of their naval capabilities,” he added.

Iranian attacks ‘an unacceptable escalation’: Qatar to UN

In letters to the UN secretary-general and the president of the UN Security Council, Qatar has condemned Iran’s attacks on its territory and against other Gulf nations, calling them “an unacceptable escalation that threatens the security and stability of the region”.

The letters, by Sheikha Alia Ahmed bin Saif Al Thani, Qatar’s ambassador to the UN, also said that the country reserved the right to respond to the attacks.

He detailed how, on Saturday, after US and Israeli strikes killed Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Iran fired 83 missiles and 12 drones at Qatar.

Qatar was able to intercept 81 of those missiles and 11 of the drones, but two missiles slipped through and hit the Al Udeid airbase, where US forces are stationed. One drone managed to strike an early warning system. However, there were no casualties from these events.

“A number of missiles were intercepted over multiple civilian areas, including commercial and residential zones such as the West Bay residential area and the Barwa residential city,” the ambassador said in the letters.

By the morning of Sunday, March 1, “92 ballistic missiles and 17 drones were detected”, he added.

“The State of Qatar renewed its call for an immediate halt to any escalatory actions, a return to the table of dialogue, prioritization of the language of reason and wisdom, and efforts to contain the crisis in a manner that preserves the security of the region, safeguards the interests of its peoples, and prevents slippage toward broader confrontations.”

Israeli military issues evacuation warning in Beirut’s southern suburbs

The Israeli military has issued a forced evacuation warning to residents in Beirut’s southern suburbs, specifically from a building identified on a map shared by Israel’s Arabic-language spokesperson.

He threatened that residents need to evacuate immediately and move at least 300 metres (0.2 miles) away.
