Football at the Olympics comes to an end
And with that, the football competitions at the Paris Olympics come to an end.
Spain won the gold medal in the men’s football event, while the USA emerged winners in the women’s category.
Both the men’s and women’s events featured exciting contests, as we witnessed a major chunk of young talent grab the headlines. Be it the likes of Fermin Lopez for Spain or Trinity Rodman for USA.

The USA flag hoists high
The flag of the United States rises highest as the country’s anthem plays in the background, to mark the gold medal achievement of their women’s football team.
This is Team USA’s 35th gold medal at the Paris Olympics. They are second in the medal tally behind China, who have 37 golds.

The USA win the gold medal!
Finally, the Americans receive the elusive gold medal from FIFA President Gianni Infantino.
The USA players, dressed in all-blue tracksuits, join hands as they stand on the top of the podium together. They raise their arms, thanking fans at the Parc des Princes, as they soak in the joy of being Olympic champions.
It’s a record-extending fifth gold for the USA, who have dominated women’s football for years.
It is the first time the USA have taken the Olympic title in 12 years, their gold in Paris adding to those won in 1996, 2004, 2008 and 2012.
The USA slipped from the top of the FIFA rankings after their 2023 World Cup heartbreak, but this Olympic gold medal will certainly be the best form of redemption, helping them climb up the ladder while also warning their opponents, that they are back!
Young forwards Smith, Swanson and Rodman played a major role in their success at the Paris Games, while credit also goes to manager Hayes, who delivered the best in her first assignment.
Hayes only arrived from Chelsea in late May but has worked wonders in a short space of time with a team that a year ago was sent packing from the World Cup in the last 16.
It has been a rollercoaster of emotions for the Americans in the space of a year, but a happy ending to cap it all.

Brazil are awarded the silver
Brazil’s players, who are wearing yellow and blue tracksuits, are awarded their silver medals.
It’s the third time the South Americans have finished second, having previously done so in 2004 and 2008. Interestingly, all three times they lost in the final to the United States.
A silver medal at the Paris Games is a terrific achievement for Brazil, who made it out of the group stage by the finest of margins. They had a superb run in the knockouts, beating hosts France in the quarterfinals and thrashing the reigning world champions Spain in the semifinals.
Unfortunately, they just came up short against the USA in this final.
It was not quite the ending that their legendary captain Marta was hoping for, as she bowed out of her sixth and last Olympics aged 38 with a third silver medal.
The fans at the Parc des Princes gave Marta a huge round of applause as she received her medal.

Germany receive the bronze medal
The Germany players, black and white tracksuits, are the first to receive their Olympic medals.
The medals are being handed from a tray that is made by the French luxury fashion house brand Louis Vuitton.
It’s a bronze for the Germans, who beat Spain 1-0 in the third-place playoff, having lost to the USA in the semifinals.
It’s the fourth bronze for Germany following a third-place finish in 2000, 2004 and 2008.

A dream come true for Hayes
“I’m very emotional, it’s a dream of mine to be in this position,” a tearful Hayes told Eurosport.
“I have to thank my dad for pushing me to this point, to be able to come and coach an incredible group of players that have received me so well.
“[They have] taken on everything I asked, they are tremendous people, players and role models. I love them.”

Hayes tastes first success on international stage
Englishwoman Hayes took over Team USA only a couple of months before the Olympics, prompting concerns if that was enough time to train the four-time world champions according to her tactics.
The former Chelsea manager was also under pressure as this is her first managerial role with a national team, having previously led the Women’s Super League club to seven league titles and five FA Cups among a range of trophies.
But the 47-year-old proved why she is a serial winner, leading her team to the Olympic title in her first assignment, all while maintaining a 100-percent winning record at the Paris Games.
Talk about an instant impact!

No fairytale end to Marta’s illustrious career
Head coach Elias is seen hugging a teary-eyed Marta, who has just played her final match at the Olympics. The Paris Games were her sixth and final Olympic campaign, as the 38-year-old hangs up her boots later this year.
Marta is among the greatest players in the women’s game, and is the most high-profile Brazilian international, having scored the most goals for the South Americans across men’s and women’s football.
The Brazilian forward, who sported a half ponytail, will finish her international career as a three-time Olympic silver medallist and a one-time World Cup runner-up.

Heartbreak for Brazil
The Brazil players and head coach Elias are in tears, following their disappointing defeat in the Olympic final.
The South Americans came out of the group stage by the finest of margins but produced consistently excellent performances in the knockout stages, thrashing the likes of World Cup winners Spain in the semifinals.
Even against the USA, Brazil looked dominant in the first half but they slipped after conceding and could not claw back into the match.
They will get a silver medal for a third time, having previously also finished second in 2004 and 2008.

Joy for the USA
The USA players have gathered in a huddle on the field at the Parc des Princes and are jumping in joy!
Hayes is celebrating her first major title with her side.
Swanson and Smith, the two USA forwards, are crying tears of joy.
What a moment for the Americans, who were pre-tournament favourites and delivered on the expectations in Paris.

The USA are back on the top of the global stage!
Less than a year after suffering their worst-ever exit at the Women’s World Cup, the USA have risen to the top of women’s football.
The four-time world champions are now a record five-time Olympic champions!
The team came under a lot of criticism after their poor performance at the World Cup, but they have now silenced their doubters.
The new-look USA of Hayes were unbeaten at the Paris Games and will end their campaign on top of the Olympic podium.

The USA win a record-extending fifth Olympic gold medal!
The United States have done it! They have beaten Brazil 1-0 in the final to get their hands on the elusive gold medal, thanks to a second-half strike from Swanson.
This extends their Olympic gold tally to five – the most by any country in women’s football.
It’s their first Olympic gold since the London 2012 Games, and their first under new coach Emma Hayes.
Brazil have to settle for their third silver medal, and that means Marta will retire from international football without an Olympic gold medal.
