  • Liverpool midfielder Dominik Szoboszlai scored an 88th-minute penalty to give his side a 1-0 win at Inter Milan in the Champions League, which boosts their hopes of a top-eight finish and direct qualification for the last 16.
  • With the shadow of absent forward Mohamed Salah’s recent falling out with head coach Arne Slot still hanging over them, Liverpool thought they had taken the lead through a close-range header from Ibrahima Konate, but a lengthy VAR review saw the goal chalked off for a Hugo Ekitike handball moments before.
  • The Premier League side had plenty of possession but struggled to create shots on target, and it took Alessandro Bastoni pulling the shirt of substitute Florian Wirtz late on, and the referee pointing to the spot after another VAR review, to give them the chance they desperately needed.
  • Szoboszlai stepped up and slammed the ball past keeper Yann Sommer to lift his side to eighth place in the table on 12 points after six of their eight group games. Inter are in fifth place, also on 12 points, but with a superior goal difference.

    Goodbye for now

That is it from our live coverage of the UEFA Champions League on Tuesday.

Liverpool put their woes to one side in Milan with a crucial win, both for their on-field and off-field issues.

The Mohamed Salah situation is likely to rumble on over the coming days and into the Egyptian’s appearance at the Africa Cup of Nations – a tournament we will also cover live here on Al Jazeera Sport – but for this evening, the Reds have a crucial three points on the road.

Inter will lick their wounds from what they will see as a soft penalty at the end, but also from a below-par performance from a side that reached the final of this competition last season.

Please join us on Wednesday for more live coverage of the Champions League if you can, and stay tuned to Al Jazeera Sport for all our latest news and features from the world of sport.

For now, though, from Kevin Hand and Patrick Keddie, it’s goodbye.

Next up for Al Jazeera Sport: Real Madrid vs Man City

There is more Champions League action on Wednesday here on Al Jazeera Sport.

From Arne Slot, the attention turns to another manager under pressure as Xabi Alonso’s Real Madrid entertain Manchester City.

City are led by former Barcelona manager and player Pep Guardiola, adding plenty of spice to the tie for Los Blancos, who have only won two of their last seven games.

Join us for that one if you can. In the meantime, click here for our full preview.

Mkhitaryan gives his reaction to defeat for Inter

“No one deserved to win; it was a balanced game,” the Inter midfielder told Amazon Prime.

“I don’t know how they came up with a penalty that didn’t exist. If you give a penalty for a contact like this, then everything is a penalty.

“We knew they had some problems, but that didn’t change anything for us.

“We created a few chances to score, but we accept it and move forward.”

Slot’s thoughts on Mohamed Salah’s situation at Liverpool

“He has been so influential for the club and his teammates, and it is sad for the club and his teammates,” the Liverpool manager added.

“The focus should be on this result. I know that all the questions will still be about Mo on Friday, ahead of the next game.

“You say everyone makes mistakes in life, then does the player think he has made a mistake?

“Next question is whether the initiative comes from the player or me. But I think tonight should be about the team’s performance.”

Arne Slot’s reaction to Liverpool win

“If you want to finish top eight, then 15 points minimum is what you need… A good thing to do then is win at Inter,” the Liverpool manager told Amazon Prime.

“There was a lot of commitment from the players. Second half, we pressed higher – that also had to do with the changes they made.

“When we were outplayed, all 11 players came behind the ball to ensure we didn’t concede.

“If you mean [that this is a relief] after a draw and a defeat, then the result is a relief.

“If you mean something else, then that is separate. It was hard on the players to concede in the last minute against Leeds [in the 3-3 Premier League draw at the weekend].”

We’ll bring you his thoughts on Mohamed Salah next.

Liverpool’s captain speaks on Salah’s situation at Liverpool

“It is difficult, but it is a collective, difficult situation,” van Dijk added.

“Between Mo and the club, things are going on, that is the reality. It doesn’t change our focus and desire to get results for the club.

“I am not the one who has to speak about if someone needs to apologise. He aired his opinion, and that is for the club to deal with. If you look at the dressing room, nothing has changed. The focus was there.

“The reality is, Mo is going to Africa [for the Africa Cup of Nations] next week.

“I have known him for a long time. He has been a big part of my success at Liverpool, as I have been for him. We speak, but those things stay inside. We just have to shut out the outside noise.”

Liverpool’s van Dijk gives his reaction to UCL win

“Winning is a good feeling, especially in the period we are in – trying to find consistency, something to build in,” the Liverpool defender told Amazon Prime.

“It was always going to be tough here. It nearly ended 0-0, but it ended positively for us.

“It doesn’t change anything. There is so much noise from the outside world. When you don’t perform, it is deserved.

“It is down to us to perform on the pitch. We have the quality to do so. We are not doing it as often as we like.

“We need to stick together; that is the quality of Liverpool.”

“It is a tough situation,” the Liverpool and Scotland defender added.

“He is one of the best players to play for this club. Whatever happens, happens. We are all together and that is all that matters.

“It is up to other people not me, but I love playing with Mo Salah, and I hope that continues.”

“Huge result. We knew we had to come here and be resilient,” the Liverpool defender told Amazon Prime.

“A good night and a big three points. We all needed the result. The club as a whole. We know the results and performances haven’t been good enough.

“When you are in the Champions League, you want to do well, and it was a huge result.

“We know how important the top eight is and avoiding the playoffs. That was our aim, and it doesn’t change now.”

The stats as Liverpool dominate in Milan

The Reds had 12 shots with five on target, while Inter had nine and two respectively.

The share of the play was exactly 50-50, but there was no doubt who made more use of the ball, especially with their two VAR moments that Liverpool will feel should have both gone their way.

It may not necessarily have resulted in an easier night, but they will point to it as being a sign of their dominance.
