“In the first half we were much closer to scoring, with the amount of situations and combinations,” the Arsenal manager said.

“In the second half, we didn’t dominate as well, as we gave unnecessary possession away, so you don’t travel as well as a team, and as a result, you are not as compact.

“Every time you don’t win [it feels like a missed opportunity,] but otherwise we would be 12,15 or 20 points ahead.

“I have to praise the players for what they have done in this period because the demands of the schedule is unbelievable.”

“Definitely happy with the performance, to a certain extent, the result as well, because Arsenal is an excellent team,” the Liverpool manager said.

“In the first half, they had much more possession than us, although in some spells of the game, you could see we did well and dominated the ball.

“You hope for more chance creations, but we were close and hit the bar in the first half.”

“We faced an unbelievable team,” Liverpool midfielder Dominik Szoboszlai said.

“But we showed again today why we became champions last season.

“This was a step forward after recent weeks.”

Real have beaten rivals Atletico 2-1 in a Madrid derby in Jeddah in their Spanish Super Cup semifinal.

Rordygo provided the winning goal for Los Blancos to set up a meeting with Barcelona in the final on Sunday.

Liverpool are due to play Barnsley at home in Monday’s FA Cup third-round fixture before hosting Burnley in a Premier League match on January 17.

That is followed by an away Champions League match against Marseille on January 21.

Arsenal face Portsmouth in Sunday’s FA Cup third-round clash before playing Chelsea away in the first leg of the League Cup semifinals three days later.

Their next Premier League game is away to Nottingham Forest on January 17.

Finally, their streak of away games ends with a match at Inter Milan in the Champions League on January 20.

Arsenal are held to a goalless draw at home by Liverpool.

The Gunners waste the opportunity to extend their lead at the top of the table, failing to capitalise on the points dropped by their closest challengers, Man City and Aston Villa, on Wednesday.

Arteta’s side remain first on 49 points, City are second on 43, while Villa are third on the same tally, behind on goal difference.
