  • Defending champions India beat the United States by 29 runs in the teams’ opening Group A fixture at the ICC T20 Men’s World Cup 2026.
  • The match, played at Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai, India, saw the USA win the toss and reduce India to 77-6 before a fifty from Suryakumar Yadav rescued the tournament co-hosts.
  • India defeated South Africa in the final of the previous edition and, as co-hosts with Sri Lanka, are favourites to lift the title once again.
  • The United States made their debut at a T20 World Cup at the 2024 edition, which they co-hosted with the West Indies, and provided the greatest cricketing shock by beating Pakistan in the group stage.
  • Pakistan beat the Netherlands to open the current edition with the first game of the day on Saturday, while the West Indies beat Scotland in the second game of the day.

    Its a wrap

India managed to hold on after a near-scare against the USA to take two important points from their tournament opener.

USA showed plenty of promise with the ball and bat, and will hope to build on the positives they showed today at the Wankhede.

India will look to right the errors from today if they are to successfully defend their T20 crown.

We hope you enjoyed today’s coverage of this exciting affair, and on behalf of Kevin Hand, this is Rohan Sharma signing off.

Reminder of the earlier news: ICC in talks with Pakistan to reverse India boycott

The International Cricket Council is in talks with the Pakistan Cricket Board to resolve the boycott of its T20 World Cup 2026 fixture against India on February 15.

Any clash between archrivals India and Pakistan is one of the most lucrative in cricket, worth millions of dollars in broadcast, sponsoring and advertising revenue.

But the fixture was thrown into doubt after Pakistan’s government ordered the team not to play the match in Colombo.

The Pakistan Cricket Board reached out to the ICC after a formal communication from the cricket world body, a source close to the developments has told the AFP news agency.

The ICC was seeking a resolution through dialogue and not confrontation, the source added.

‘Only I can tell how much pressure we were in’

India skipper Suryakumar Yadav dissected the match, as well, “Only I can tell at the position we were in at 77 for 6, how much pressure we were in.

“But I have played a lot of cricket here in the maidaans [playing grounds]. The wicket was a little different from what is usually here at the Wankhede.

“When we woke up, there was not a lot of sun. There was not enough sunlight, and the curators did the best they could. But at the same time, we can’t brush everything under the carpet.

“We could’ve batted a little better. But it’s OK, we now have five days before the next match. Washi [Washington Sundar] is joining us in Delhi [for the match against Namibia]. Bumrah had a high fever. The rest everything is good.”

‘We dropped a few catches which cost us the game’

USA captain Monank Patel provided his thoughts at the post-match presentation: “I thought our bowlers did a great job. The way they assessed the conditions and the pitch. It gave us a good momentum and a good start.

“The variations they showed in the powerplay gave us a great start. We dropped a few catches which cost us the game.”

“Here and there we dropped a few catches. That cost us the game. I thought 160 was a good score. We will take this score any day on this pitch.

“The top three couldn’t perform and I thought the intent was missing. But a lot of learning and a lot of positives from this game.

“Will help us going forward. The way we handled the pressure, playing in front of a big crowd and against India.

“Lots of positives [to take from this match]. It’s going to help us in the next three games. We will come back stronger.”

‘One batter had to bat till the end’

Suryakumar Yadav for his superb unbeaten 84 off 49 balls, is adjudged Player of the Match. Here is what he had to say: “I knew some day, it was going to come [a big score]. I was trying to hold the innings for the team in the last year.

“I packed my kit bag [after my last innings last year], spent time with my family for two weeks, and then went to Nagpur, and it was a totally different feeling.

“I always felt there was a need for a batter to bat to the end. I did not feel it was a 180-190 [run] wicket, it was more like a 140 [run] wicket.

“I have played a lot of my cricket here, so I know how to bat on similar wickets. From being 77 for 6, and then batting till the end, you had to understand one batter had to bat till the end. Was just trying to play good shots and my shots.”

    Suryakumar spares India’s blushes

It wasn’t quite the start the Men in Blue would have wanted, especially at the very ground where MS Dhoni’s six sealed a second ODI World Cup triumph in 2011.

USA showed plenty of discipline in their bowling, taking four wickets in their opening powerplay to leave India teetering at 46 for 4.

Things continued to unravel at 77 for 6, before Axar and Suryakumar came together to add 41 vital runs to help stabilise the innings.

The Indian captain then went ballistic in the final overs to push India to a strong total of 161 for 9.

Suryakumar Yadav’s heroics, followed by a strong bowling effort sees India win their #T20WorldCup opener 👏

    WICKET! Ranjane LBW. USA 132-8

Ranjane goes after another shorter one, pulling high over deep midwicket for a 91-metre six.

Despite bowling a wide off his last ball, Siraj lands a delightful yorker at the base of the stumps which Ranjane was well late on.

His dismissal proves to be the final act of this eventful tournament opener for India.

    19 overs. USA 121-7

Despite giving up 10 runs, Hardik has done his job here for his side.

USA are mathematically out of this match. It is just a matter now of how many more runs they can add to improve their overall net run rate.
