Trump leaving G7 meeting early amid conflict in Middle East

US President Trump is departing the Group of Seven summit in Canada a day early due to the intensifying conflict between Israel and Iran, the Associated Press news agency reports.

“President Trump had a great day at the G7, even signing a major trade deal with the United Kingdom and Prime Minister Keir Starmer,” White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said.

“Much was accomplished, but because of what’s going on in the Middle East, President Trump will be leaving tonight after dinner with Heads of State.”

    Here’s what happened today

We will be closing this live page shortly. Here’s a recap of the day’s major developments:

    • Israel has bombed the Tehran offices of Iran’s state broadcaster, alleging they were being used by the Iranian armed forces.
    • Iranian officials have rejected the claim, denouncing the attack as a “war crime”.
    • Iran launched a wave of retaliatory drone and missile attacks, aimed at Haifa in northern Israel as well as Tel Aviv.
    • Iran said 45 women and children have been killed in Israel’s latest attacks and another 75 women and children injured. Israeli attacks on other parts of the capital have also killed three Iranian Red Crescent Society workers who were carrying out rescue operations.
    • US President Donald Trump, speaking on the sidelines of the G7 summit in Canada, said Iran should talk about de-escalating hostilities with Israel “before it’s too late”.
    • Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu refused to rule out the possibility of targeting Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, saying: “It’s not going to escalate the conflict. It’s going to end the conflict.”
    • The Israeli army claimed it has destroyed at least 120, or one-third, of Iran’s surface-to-surface missile launchers.
    • Iran’s President Masoud Pezeshkian has urged Iranians to unite after Israeli missiles caused extensive damage across the country, including the city of Kermanshah, where a hospital was hit.

How do ballistic missiles work and where can they reach?

In response to Israeli attacks on its nuclear sites and senior military figures, Iran has launched hundreds of ballistic missiles towards Israel, with some striking targets on the ground.

Although Israel intercepted many of the incoming missiles, several breached its defences, causing significant damage and casualties, including hits on central Tel Aviv and other areas.

The exact size of Iran’s ballistic missile arsenal is unclear, but it is widely considered one of the largest and most advanced in the region.

Check out our visual explainer to find out how ballistic missiles work and how they are being used in the ongoing conflict.

Human toll of Israel’s attack on Iran

Israel’s attacks on Tehran have not only targeted military bases and nuclear sites, but have also penetrated the bedrooms, kitchens and living rooms of civilians. Children have been killed, teachers have fallen silent, athletes have been buried in the rubble.

All of them were as far removed from politics as possible.

According to the Iranian Ministry of Health and Medical Education, at least 224 people have been killed and 1,481 wounded.

Netanyahu seeking regime change in Iran ‘very irresponsible’

Al Jazeera’s senior political analyst, Marwan Bishara, says Netanyahu has spoken about seeking regime change in Iran because “he’s a very irresponsible and criminal leader”.

“We know what happens when you do regime change from the outside,” Bishara said, referring to the US invasion of Iraq that resulted in tens of thousands of casualties.

As a result of that devastating war, the US lost “so much credibility and standing in the Middle East and in the world”, Bishara said.

“Iran is four times bigger and it does have… a regime that is quite entrenched after 45 years of being in power,” he added.

Netanyahu, he said, is driving the US and Trump into “another adventure to which Trump ran an election against”.

Iran warns of its ‘biggest and most devastating’ attack amid wave of strikes

As Iran launches new drone and missile strikes against Israel, Al Jazeera’s Dorsa Jabbari said this “is the ninth wave of attacks that Iran has launched on Israel since Friday”.

A statement aired on Iran’s state TV warned that tonight’s attack would be the “biggest and most devastating” yet. The escalation marks a dramatic intensification in the ongoing confrontation between the two regional powers.

Iran said it is using a mix of drones and missiles, employing a tactic designed to overwhelm Israel’s air defence systems.

“We know it’s a mix of drones and missiles – launch drones first – engage air defence systems Israel has and then the missiles… they get to Israel much faster,” Jabbari explained. “Some hypersonic missiles that Iran has can get to Israel in a few minutes.”

UK MPs warn against military involvement in Israel-Iran conflict

MPs in the United Kingdom have urged the government to stay out of the escalating conflict between Israel and Iran, warning against any form of military support without parliamentary consent.

Speaking in Parliament, Labour MP Abtisam Mohamed said: “Given that Israel’s claims have been challenged, even by US intelligence assessments, can the foreign secretary assure this House that no UK military support, whether direct or indirect, will be given without the clear and explicit consent of this House, and that this government has learned the hard lessons of Iraq and Libya and will not repeat them?”

In response, Foreign Secretary David Lammy insisted, “Categorically, the UK is not involved in Israel strikes.”

He added that the UK does maintain a “regional role”, with UK military assets based in Cyprus, Bahrain and Qatar.

Labour MP Barry Gardiner also pressed Lammy on whether the UK had sought independent verification of Iran’s nuclear programme from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).

“The failure to get transparent information from UNSCOM and UNMOVIC caused untold damage 22 years ago,” Gardiner warned, referencing the Iraq war.

Divisions emerge at G7 over response to Israel-Iran escalation

Reporting from Banff, Canada, where leaders from the Group of Seven (G7) bloc of nations are meeting, Al Jazeera’s Diplomatic Editor James Bays says divisions are surfacing over how the group should respond to the escalating conflict between Israel and Iran.

“It’s now emerging that there are real differences between these leaders, and it has been reported that [US] President [Donald] Trump does not want to sign a statement on de-escalation,” Bays said.

The G7 is being joined in discussions by the secretaries-general of NATO and the United Nations.

“You have the European countries… they say there should be de-escalation and diplomacy – but they always say Israel has a right to defend itself,” Bays added. “On the other end, you have Japan, the only non-Western country in the G7, and it strongly condemned Israel’s attack when it first took place on Friday.

“I think for now it seems Iran is not prepared to talk under fire. And it looks like there’s going to be a real problem getting a joint statement from G7 countries.”

IAEA warns Israel-Iran conflict threatens nuclear facilities, diplomacy

The head of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Rafael Grossi, has warned that escalating hostilities between Israel and Iran pose grave dangers to diplomacy and nuclear safety and has urged all parties to exercise maximum restraint.

Speaking at an emergency session of the United Nations nuclear watchdog’s Board of Governors on Monday in Vienna, Director-General Grossi stressed that the region is at a critical juncture.

“Military escalation threatens lives, increases the chance of a radiological release with serious consequences for people and the environment, and delays indispensable work towards a diplomatic solution for the long-term assurance that Iran does not acquire a nuclear weapon,” Grossi said.

US Senator Bernie Sanders says Netanyahu ‘started this war’

Sanders blamed Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu for triggering the latest escalation with Iran and warned against any US involvement in the conflict.

“Netanyahu started this war by attacking Iran,” Sanders said on X, adding that “he assassinated Ali Shamkhani, Iran’s lead nuclear negotiator, deliberately sabotaging US-Iran nuclear negotiations.”

Sanders, who has been a vocal critic of Israel’s ongoing deadly assault on Gaza, said “the US must not be dragged into another illegal Netanyahu war – either militarily or financially”.
